In 2012 I headed to Seattle & Portland for a short trip. But I was lucky enough to be able to wander through Portland's Saturday Market before I left. One stall had this amazing artist that had a lot of surreal pantings of trees and moons. I could only afford (and carry on) a small piece but was glad of my purchase. A few years ago I was at the CES show in Las Vegas. It was hard work, and on the last day I had 20 minutes to wander the show floor. I snapped this photo of I think the Toshiba or Logitech booth, not knowing what the cool massive sculpture was. It wasn't until I got home and looked at the photo that I realized the entire thing was made out of computers, tvs, and smart phones! This has been an amazing year more focused on travel! I had two very opposite business trips. The first, in the dead of winter, was to Toronto, Canada. I had just a little time to explore and so visited an aquarium & museum before a nasty snowstorm hit. The second work trip was to sunny Miami, FL in the heat of summer. This trip I had tons of bad luck and ended up just having a short time at the beach. And throughout this year I was busy preparing for my dream vacation to Egypt! Occasionally you witness someone else’s Travel Missteps and Mistakes. On a flight from Denver to Germany right before Christmas I saw this big drunk German guy in a cowboy hat walk onto the plane late for boarding. He had a bunch of loose items, mostly what looked like various Walmart/Target toys for children. Since he was late most of the overhead space was taken, so he would just jam a toy here and there as he found space while walking towards the back of the plane. Apparently he had also put some toys in the space for the fire extinguisher
I was in Oregon for a business trip. At the end of the conference the final dinner party was held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Which is home to the USS Blueblack, a submarine that was used for the outside shots in the move The Hunt for Red October as well as various tv shows. What is even more awesome is that you can actually go inside this submarine! This is my budget breakdown of my trip to Egypt (with a layover in Frankfurt, Germany). I knew going into this trip that it was going to be on the expensive side. I had budgeted $6262.41 in expenses for this trip. Here is how I actually spent that budget: Airfare: $972.26 I had watched airfare obsessively for about 2 months before I saw the airfare drop significantly through Lufthansa. I was able to get a 1 stop through Frankfurt on the way to Egypt, including a 12 hour layover in Frankfurt. And then on the way home I'd have 2 quick stops in
When I was little I wanted to be an archeologist or paleontologist. While that didn't happen I can live vicariously through the volunteers and employees at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. At the end of Prehistoric Journey is the Paleontology lab, where you can see the progress that is being made on specimens recently brought in from the field. He kind of looks like John Hammond from Jurassic Park. If you are a member of the museum, they also do many special nights where you can actually go into the lab and see a lot more
The Denver Art Museum had an exhibit called Brilliant: Cartier in the 20th Century which I was lucky enough to see in its last few days. There were many beautiful tiaras at the Cartier exhibit. While I loved the early tiaras for their ornate garland style, this beautiful aquamarine is also timeless. A few years ago I fulfilled a childhood dream of going to Hogwarts. I had already learned from Pottermore that I was sorted into Ravenclaw. For years I had thought myself Gryffindor but realized my mistake and found my home in the Claws. So I dutifully got myself my House gear when I went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Here I am dressed in my Ravenclaw robes, sweater, and tie for Halloween 2012 I'm your typical Ravenclaw student, I love learning so much I have a Time Turner!
