Travel Missteps: The 4th of July Parade

By |July 4th, 2016|Categories: Geek, Pop Culture, Travel, Travel Missteps|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

In 2014 we were determined to have a perfect view of the Coronado's Independence Day Parade. The year before we woke up too late, and had to stand at a corner, craning to see.  So my father had gotten up early, and staked out premo places outside of our hotel so we could see the parade in comfort. We had picked up beach chairs the day before, had a cooler of food, blankets, and ample sunscreen. We were prepared! And it was a perfect spot! We watched as floats and military bands went by. But after about half an hour, we

Travel Missteps: Where’s Dad?

A lot of my family lives in Kansas. It is around an 8 hour drive from Colorado to Kansas, and so I've become a conquerer of the rest/truck stops and restaurants along our route from years of making that road trip. However, one place my father refuses to go back to is the KFC in Fort Hays, KS. To say he had a bad experience is a bit of an understatement. It started out like a normal stop. We were hungry, and there aren't a whole lot of healthy options that are quick, because we've learned who really wants to

The Denver Art Museum had an exhibit called Brilliant: Cartier in the 20th Century which I was lucky enough to see in its last few days. This stunning emerald necklace was one of the highlights. The emerald is huge and almost translucent. Necklace worn by Countess of Granard. Cartier London, special order, 1932. Museum Monday is an every other week series about museum news, objects, and reviews.

Souvenir Saturday: Mini Rootbeer Mug

By |June 11th, 2016|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , |0 Comments

One constant of family road trips back to see the relatives were the crumbly greasy burgers and rootbeer from NuWay, a burger chain in Wichita, KS. We'd go at least once every trip, sometimes two or three times. Not by my choice. But because it was a "hometown favorite" of my parents. Every time we went, I'd get sick. So one time I didn't order food, instead I got a miniature rootbeer mug. Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.

Its finally the start of summer! This month was also fun that my company Wayin acquired another company (Engage Sciences) and so its been great to meet all my new co-workers! Travel Santa Fe, NM This month I went on a quick road trip to Santa Fe, NM. I had been back in the 90's as a child, but didn't remember much of it. I didn't plan anything for this trip so I mainly just walked around the main square and shopped. It reminded me a lot like the square in Antigua, Guatemala, and I had fun shopping for rough

I'm afraid of heights. While sometimes I will test this fear, one thing I just cannot handle is very fast roller coasters, or ones that make you go upside down. But when visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter I decided I had to see the Triwizard Tournament Dragon Challenge theming for the Dueling Dragon coasters, even if I wasn't going to ride it. On my second day I had early admission so I entered the queue and slowly walked through it, waving others past me. First you'll see the banners for the 4 champions. As you walk you'll see the

Museum Monday: Dionysus Statue Selfie

By |May 30th, 2016|Categories: Museums, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Dionysus taking a Selfie When I was visiting the Roman section of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada the lighting wasn't that great.  I didn't want to use my flash, as that would wash out the details of the statue. So instead I risked using the existing lighting. And it makes it look like this Dionysus statue is taking a selfie. Dionysus at ROM Museum Monday is an every other week series about museum news, objects, and reviews.
