Souvenir Saturday: White Tigers of the Secret Garden

By |February 16th, 2019|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

As a child I loved White Tigers (I was unaware they were due to selective breeding) to the point that I demanded to be cast as a White Tiger in the kindergarten "Old McDonald Had A Farm" production (but was denied and instead cast as a horse.) So in 2011 when I was in Las Vegas I was excited to visit Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden to see their White Tigers. To commemorate the visit I got a sweatshirt, a shirt, and a fuzzy magnet! Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.

Oceanscape

This was one of my first projects in a high school where you lay objects on a piece of photo paper, then expose it to light. I brought in a mix of real and fake seashells, coral, and keychains to make this scene and I think it turned out pretty well! Every Friday Lili shares her favorite photography & the stories behind the photos.

Museum Monday: Dior’s Palladium Dress

By |February 11th, 2019|Categories: Museums, Pop Culture, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |2 Comments

Denver Art Museum has an exhibit called Dior: From Paris to the World right now and it's really well done. Each space has its own style, lighting, and music. I spent hours going through the exhibit. One dress I was excited to see in person is this dress, the Palladium Dress from Dior's 1992 collection. It served as the main inspiration for Sailor Moon's Princess Serenity dress. In fact the creator Naoko Takeuchi based many of the outfits or drawings on fashion pieces. There is less than a month left in the exhibit. I highly recommend that you check it out. Museum Monday is

Love Locks

By |February 7th, 2019|Categories: Culture, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Ever see locks attached to a bridge? They are Love Locks. Couples will attach a lock and then throw away the key to signify their lasting love together. I've seen them all over Europe and even started to see them in the US. (The photos here are from Frankfurt, Germany.) But the weight of these locks can damage the bridges and they are costly to remove, so many cities are trying to encourage the practice to stop.

Travel Missteps: That One Consistent Mistake

By |February 4th, 2019|Categories: Travel, Travel Missteps|Tags: , , |0 Comments

One consistent mistake I make is safely packing away my keys (or hats/gloves when on a tropical trip in winter) deep in my bag. I always think, "I've got to keep this safe!" And every single time I take a shuttle or uber home, I end up having to rifle through my bags on my porch in the dark trying to find the keys now deeply buried in my overstuffed bags. I now add a checklist item to my packing list to put the keys somewhere higher up in the bag to try to combat this, it seems to be

Souvenir Saturday: Petrified Wood

By |February 2nd, 2019|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Christmas 2016 I spent with my parents while visiting San Francisco and Napa Valley. One day we went on a few wine tastings, and on the way I was excited that our GPS told us we were on "Petrified Forest Road". I quickly googled and found an actual petrified forest was coming up. I begged my parents to stop, and they gave me about 20 minutes to explore it. I was so excited I could have spent all afternoon, but to commemorate this I bought a $55 petrified wood specimen. This one is unique in that some quartz crystal got in,

One New Year's Day years ago I took a snowy, foggy, gondola ride in Venice, Italy. It was an otherworldly experience to be out on the water. Every Friday Lili shares her favorite photography & the stories behind the photos.
