Souvenir Saturday: Why Did I Buy This?

By |April 13th, 2019|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , |0 Comments

Jet-lagged. Tired. One last layover before home. Store was about to close and I grabbed this. I hadn't been outside of the airport, but for some reason I had to have this for my collection. It was impulsive and stupid and every time I see it I wonder why I bothered. I have since been to North Carolina (but not the coast) at least I can say I have been there now! Souvenir Saturday: Novelty Shot Glasses

I use to collect shot glasses everywhere I went. Back in my college days I'd even use them! But towards the end of me collecting shot glasses I finally caved and bought a few novelty ones that you couldn't drink out of, you know the types with something glued to the inside or outside of the shot glass. Here are 3 I bought in San Diego featuring the Del Coronado Hotel and an Orca. Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.

Souvenir Saturday: Clay Shot Glass

By |July 23rd, 2016|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , |0 Comments

I use to be a little obsessed when souvenir hunting. I had a mental checklist of items I needed to add to my collection. Which is why I searched high and low for a unique shot glass in Guatemala. I shopped in El Mercado for hours but not finding anything. I was being too picky. And then I saw this little clay shot glass, small and dirty and for some reason I thought it was perfect. And so I bought it! And then a few stores down I found the actual perfect shot glass...but I had spent all my money!

I have a wide collection of shot glasses, but most of mine are functional. This is one of my only kitchy shot glass, from The Venetian hotel in Las Vegas. It is in the shape of a Gondolier, the people who guide the small boats in venice. I picked this up after riding the gondola in the hotel. Souvenir Saturday: Shot Glasses

A Brief Un-History of the Shot Glass Shot Glasses have become a common souvenir staple the world round. It surprised me to learn that there really isn’t any idea on who first created the shot glass and what their initial purpose was for. There are actually so many stories and legends on why they were created and how they got their name, ranging from the plausible to outright legends. What can be said is that in 1940’s the first use of the term “Shot Glass” was printed in the New York Times in reference to a standard measurement of alcohol.
