While the open-air museum at Memphis is known for the colossal statue of Ramses II there are two great deception of the Pharaoh wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt on the grounds. The first is found next to the garden area. The second is found among the rows of broken statues. Museum Monday is an every other week series about museum news, objects, and reviews.
I love taking photos of doors and windows. Here are some of my favorite from the little island of Burano, near Venice, Italy. I had the chance to wander around the deserted streets of Burano on New Years Day a few years ago and to peek into the windows and see the families celebrating together. I also enjoyed the chance to see the beautifully decorated doors amongst the multi-colored houses. Last year the Denver Museum of Nature and Science had an exhibit on Poison. Part of that exhibit was around the use of poison as a plot device in literature. First up is the well known Sherlock Holmes series. Beyond showing old books, they exhibit featured common items, and some hints of what poisons were used. But while Sherlock is good, Agatha Christie is the queen of mysteries. I was sad though as I leaned in to see better, that they listed which poison was used in which book. SPOILER ALERT! Jeeze! But its not just mysteries. A lot of children's
Halloween is my favorite time of the year! I wanted to share with you all some of my past favorite Pumpkin Carvings! This is the front of a pumpkin, showing a witch in front of her cauldron! And this is the back! When lit it would cast flickering shadows and light in the form of the moon, stars, and wisps off of the witch's potion! I hadn't thought about carving the backs of pumpkins to give more of an atmosphere! I actually hate the feeling of gutting a pumpkin. So I started using fake pumpkins
This granite scarab with the sun disk of Ra and a uraeus (cobra) which are symbols of leadership in ancient Egypt. This is about the size of a football and sits within its own shrine. If you go: The hours change depending on the season. When I went in late October it was open from 9-1 and then 4-7. Admission for foreigners without any student discounts is 60 EGP. I believe the student discount put it at 40-45 EGP. Museum Monday is an every other week series about museum news, objects, and reviews.
This lovely statue is found in the open air museum in Memphis, Egypt. It is called the "Alabaster Sphinx" or the "Calcite Sphinx" due to the yellow coloration of the stone. It is unknown which pharaoh is depicted here, but it is known it is from the 18th dynasty. Museum Monday is an every other week series about museum news, objects, and reviews.
This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw. Friday October 30, 2015 Egypt: Day 9, Part 3 – Aswan at Night It wasn't that long of a walk to the Nubian Museum. When we went the museum actually opened in the morning, then closed around lunchtime, and then opened up again at 4PM and into the night. This is actually rare nowadays in Egypt, as most other sites and museums close around 4-5. Which is actually a bummer as I was still ready to site see around that
Near the Nilometer on Elephantine Island in Aswan, Egypt, there are massive boulders you can see from the river with hieroglyphics inscribed with the cartouche of Psamtik II. It is really amazing to see these hieroglyphics so clearly from the water. And to withstand the test of time. The entrance to the Nilometer is an unassuming doorway with steps leading to the nile. It is one of the oldest Nilometers in Egypt and was in use until the 19th century.
