This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw. Monday November 2, 2015 Egypt: Day 12, Part 1 – Valley of the Kings Once again, I awoke early to finish packing as we'd not be returning to the cruise ship, our bags instead would be taken onto our next hotel. I paid the last of my bill and then we all piled into a bus to take us to the Valley of the Kings. We crossed the Nile and past green fields and local houses and came out into

Museum Monday: Djed-maat-es-ankh’s Mummy

By |July 10th, 2017|Categories: Museums, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

This is not a sarcophagus, it is actually called a cartonnage, meaning the mummy is covered with layers of plaster and then painted. (Therefore she is sealed inside and cannot be removed or opened.) This cartonnage mummy is a woman by the name of Djed-maat-es-ankh and she now resides at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada. She was likely an ordinary middle-class woman or even a musician had lived in Luxor in the 9th century BC (22nd Dynasty during the 3rd Intermediate Period) and died of a dental issue. She is one of the best-preserved examples from her timeperiod, although it is rumored

Museum Monday: Crocodile Museum at Kom Ombo

By |November 14th, 2016|Categories: Museums, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Kom Ombo is an amazing temple. Its unique due to the fact its dedicated to not one but two different gods: The falcon-headed Horus & Sobek the Crocodile-headed God. Included with your admission to the temple is a small but well curated museum dedicated to Sobek. When you first walk in, you'll be greeted by a dozen smiling preserved crocodiles resting on a bed of sand. As you walk around you'll see various statues and stele depicting Sobek. Sobek was associated with fertility (likely due to crocodiles living in the Nile) as well as military prowess. You'll also see numerous crocodile

This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw. Friday October 30, 2015 Egypt: Day 9, Part 3 – Aswan at Night It wasn't that long of a walk to the Nubian Museum. When we went the museum actually opened in the morning, then closed around lunchtime, and then opened up again at 4PM and into the night. This is actually rare nowadays in Egypt, as most other sites and museums close around 4-5. Which is actually a bummer as I was still ready to site see around that

Museum Monday: Evening at the Nubian Museum

Ramses II statue from the Temple of Gerf Hussein surveys the main exhibition hall. Traveling in Egypt, you become accustom to expect everything to be rather old and dusty. From the markets to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, things are not well labeled and lighting is almost non existent. So when visiting the Nubian Museum it was a pleasant surprise to find a modern museum! Finished in 1997 with UNESCO's help, it covers the history of Nubia, the area from Aswan and into Sudan, from pre-history all the way up to its more recent Islamic past to the

This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw.  Sunday October 25, 2015 Egypt: Day 4, Part 5 - Imhotep Museum & Kushari We finally found someone who told us that the museum we were looking for was at the entrance to Saqqara....all of Saqqara (not just the ancient part) and that we'd need to head to the car entrance to find it. So we headed back to where our driver was parked and took a short drive to the Imhotep Museum entrance. Admission to the

Museum Monday: Woman of Fayum

By |February 22nd, 2016|Categories: Museums, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

While in Egypt I didn't make it to Fayum to see their pyramids and mummies, however I did see this beautiful Fayum Portrait in Frankfurt, Germany at the Städtische Galerie Liebieghaus. These portraits were often painted during life on wood, and were placed over the mummy upon death. Read more about Fayum Portraits here. Museum Monday is an every other week series about museum news, objects, and reviews.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! When I was little, I wanted to be an Archeologist. This probably stemmed from watching Indiana Jones movies over and over again. So last year I created my own Raider's version of Indiana Jones complete with the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra. I thought it was a pretty awesome costume. But we had a work Halloween party where their kids were invited: Kid 1: Are you a cowgirl? Me: No I'm Indiana Jones. Both Kids *Blank Stare* Kid 2: What is India Jones? Me: ....a Archeologist. Both Kids *Blank Stare* Me: ... I dig up
