Museum Monday: Kom Ombo Temple at Night

I was lucky two years ago to be spending Halloween Night visiting Kom Ombo Temple. This unique temple is of Ptolemaic origin, and is unusual in that it is dedicated with symmetrical temples, one to the crocodile god Sobek, and the other the falcon headed god Haroeris (Horus the Elder). It was almost mystical being one of the last few people walking the temple that night.

Museum Monday: Secrets from the Tombs at DMNS

A year ago to the day that I rode a camel in front of the Great Pyramids, I found myself once again face to face with Ancient Egyptians. This time it was in the familiar confines of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science at their new exhibit Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs. I was attending a special Member's Only dinner, and I was very excited as they were serving Koshari, my favorite Egyptian dish! After a delicious dinner, I headed up to the new exhibit. Because DMNS is also exhibiting their Extreme Mammals exhibit in the same upstairs area, Mummies

Museum Monday: Crocodile Museum at Kom Ombo

By |November 14th, 2016|Categories: Museums, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Kom Ombo is an amazing temple. Its unique due to the fact its dedicated to not one but two different gods: The falcon-headed Horus & Sobek the Crocodile-headed God. Included with your admission to the temple is a small but well curated museum dedicated to Sobek. When you first walk in, you'll be greeted by a dozen smiling preserved crocodiles resting on a bed of sand. As you walk around you'll see various statues and stele depicting Sobek. Sobek was associated with fertility (likely due to crocodiles living in the Nile) as well as military prowess. You'll also see numerous crocodile

Last year I spent Halloween in Egypt. On the night of the 31st the cruise ship had a Galabeya Party. It is a standard dress that is slowing with sleeves. Some of us ended up buying one from the market to wear at the party. I considered it my "Halloween Costume" last year. Every Friday Lili shares her favorite photography & the stories behind the photos.

This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw. Saturday October 31, 2015 Egypt: Day 10, Part 3 – Halloween at Kom Ombo As Mikel gathered us in the lobby, he was adamant we don't shop going in or going out. That there was limited time, and the ship would leave at a specific time. We followed him, but then he stopped right before going up the steps. We all were eager to get started, but Mikel smartly let some of the pushier groups like the Chinese group with

This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw. Saturday October 31, 2015 Egypt: Day 10, Part 2 – Nile Cruise Sets Sail After we made it past the sellers at the marina near Philae Temple we set off again. A few of us were dropped off at a Perfume store. We spent a while drinking tea and smelling all the various scents. I've never owned perfume so I don't know what I like (or am allergic too) and there are so many to smell that its hard to

Night Train to Aswan

Farmland out the window. On my trip to Egypt, I spent one night on the sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan. The train from Cairo to Aswan for tourists only runs at night, so you must take the night train. It took about 13 hours. Here are my thoughts on the experience. The Station I boarded at the Giza Station. I was a bit sad as I was hoping to see the famed Ramses Station and its beautiful architecture, but we were on the Giza side of Cairo and it didn't sense to fight traffic back into town. The station is

Within the next few months I will be embarking on my dream trip of a lifetime - EGYPT! I've been wanting to do this trip forever and actually had the money saved up to go in 2011, but the revolution put a kink in my plans. I was skittish, not wanting to go during that trouble period. But I realize now, things will never be stable...at least not for another decade or so. And so I must take a leap of faith, stop waiting, and just go! So for the last few months I've been planning this trip. Below is
