However, it hasn't been on display since the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, until now! She is on display as part of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science's new exhibit Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs. You can see her headdress which isn't made from the linen of the rest of her mummy but instead glued layers of papyrus (this type of design is called cartonage) to mimic her hair. Her gilded face mask has made her famous and might be
A year ago to the day that I rode a camel in front of the Great Pyramids, I found myself once again face to face with Ancient Egyptians. This time it was in the familiar confines of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science at their new exhibit Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs. I was attending a special Member's Only dinner, and I was very excited as they were serving Koshari, my favorite Egyptian dish! After a delicious dinner, I headed up to the new exhibit. Because DMNS is also exhibiting their Extreme Mammals exhibit in the same upstairs area, Mummies
Last year the Denver Museum of Nature and Science had an exhibit on Poison. Part of that exhibit was around the use of poison as a plot device in literature. First up is the well known Sherlock Holmes series. Beyond showing old books, they exhibit featured common items, and some hints of what poisons were used. But while Sherlock is good, Agatha Christie is the queen of mysteries. I was sad though as I leaned in to see better, that they listed which poison was used in which book. SPOILER ALERT! Jeeze! But its not just mysteries. A lot of children's
This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw. Sunday October 25, 2015 Egypt: Day 4, Part 5 - Imhotep Museum & Kushari We finally found someone who told us that the museum we were looking for was at the entrance to Saqqara....all of Saqqara (not just the ancient part) and that we'd need to head to the car entrance to find it. So we headed back to where our driver was parked and took a short drive to the Imhotep Museum entrance. Admission to the
This is my travel diary of my trip to Egypt. It contains in detail my memories of what I did and saw. Sunday October 25, 2015 Egypt: Day 4, Part 4 - Saqqara Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara. As we pulled up to the complex at Saqqara it started to rain. I realized I didn't want to walk around with my big heavy bag any longer and so took out just some of the essentials into a sack. (This would be a big mistake.) Upon stepping out I found the rain to be mostly just sprinkles, and
As I wrote before in my review, I loved The Power of Poison exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Here are some of the exhibits models and artifacts in more detail. A blow dart gun, and the pot to brew & dip the tips in poison. There is something so intriguing on massive ancient tomes. I really enjoyed the faux magnification of various plants and animals in the forest area. It was very eye catching. An actual "Mad" Hatter's mercury laced hat. So many Beautiful, but Toxic Butterflies! Snow White's area was beautifully decorated and felt like
A statue of a woman from Pompeii I love statues, there is something captivating from being able to walk around and seeing the artwork from all sorts of angles. This statues is from Pompeii, and was part of the A Day in Pompeii exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in 2012. This is a reminder that Denver Museum of Nature and Science's Mythic Creatures Exhibit ends in 2 weeks on September 7th. Read my review here. Unicorn at DMNS Museum Monday is an every other week series about museum news, objects, and reviews.
Last month The Power of Poison opened up at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. While I didn't like the recent Mythical Creatures (ongoing until September 7th), I absolutely loved the Power of Poison! I found the way the exhibit is laid out beautifully with clearly planned themes, each with a different but congruent feel. Colombia's Chocó forest model. I recommend to come in the early hours of the exhibit so you can have it mostly to yourself. There are many smaller artifacts that require attention to read the place cards. I also would suggest this only for
