Souvenir Saturday: Petrified Wood

By |February 2nd, 2019|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Christmas 2016 I spent with my parents while visiting San Francisco and Napa Valley. One day we went on a few wine tastings, and on the way I was excited that our GPS told us we were on "Petrified Forest Road". I quickly googled and found an actual petrified forest was coming up. I begged my parents to stop, and they gave me about 20 minutes to explore it. I was so excited I could have spent all afternoon, but to commemorate this I bought a $55 petrified wood specimen. This one is unique in that some quartz crystal got in,

Souvenir Saturday: Money, Money, Money

By |January 19th, 2019|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Years ago I did a Girl's Trip to Las Vegas. I remember we hit up every casino for whatever their "Player's Card" free stuff was. On Freemont Street, at Binion's I won a printed photo of myself "licking" a million dollar pile of money because I panicked and couldn't think of a good pose. I've written before on the handmade pots I made on my various trips to St. John, but wanted to share one other item I got from the Maho Bay Clay Works. This lovely clay necklace wasn't made by me, but I got as a lovely reminder of my time in St. John. Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.

Souvenir Saturday: Räuchermann – German Smoker

By |December 23rd, 2017|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Räuchermann are German Smokers, figurines that you place incense in and then the smoke comes out of the figure, in this case, Santa's mouth where a pipe hangs from. I got this beautiful one in the medieval town of Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. This type of crafting is from the same area of Germany that created Nutcrackers, Christmas Pyramids, and Schwibbögen. This is one of my favorite ornaments from Germany. It's a Käthe Wohlfahrt frozen moon and stars ornament. I got it at a little stall at the Frankfurt Christmas Market. Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.

Souvenir Saturday: German Porcelain Candle House 2

By |November 25th, 2017|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

As I've written before, you'll often find these porcelain houses at German Christmas Markets. You place a candle inside and the light flickers in the windows. Some even have a chimney where you can put oil to burn for fragrance or place a small incense cone to simulate a smoking chimney.   This one is made by Kastel Keramik Haus (or they are also known as Lichthauser) and I purchased it at my first Christmas Market in Frankfurt. It was the last night of their market, and so I got some of these little houses for 50% off. It is called "Stone House

Souvenir Saturday: Candy from Harry Potter Part 3

By |November 11th, 2017|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

This is the last in the 3 part series of my favorite candy you can get at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! I got these on a whim, and they are so delicious! There are multiple versions of the snowflakes and they have a nice peppermint flavor in the white chocolate, which a little shimmer on the top! And finally, Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans! These are just as classic as Chocolate Frogs! Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.

Souvenir Saturday: Candy from Harry Potter Part 2

By |October 28th, 2017|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

For the next few weeks I'm going to share my favorite candy you can get at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! These two items can be purchased at Sugarplum's Sweetshop in Diagon Alley, I don't recall these being mentioned in the books, but they are really good. I was in Orlando around Halloween, so when I saw these Carmel Cobwebs I thought this was perfect for the season. I was sad that this box seemed simplified compared to the ornate designs of other candies. But I was so wrong. These are amazing. They taste lightly of caramel and possibly white

Souvenir Saturday: Candy from Harry Potter Part 1

For the next few weeks I'm going to share my favorite candy you can get at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! This week I'm sharing my favorite Honeydukes branded product, sherbet lemons! Well actually the more just Lemon Drops, but I share this affinity with Albus Dumbledore. At Honeydukes you can buy these pre-packaged, or empty ones that you fill up. Another sugary candy is the Sugar Quill. This is another one mentioned in the books. This version is a lolly pop, but if you dip the black part in water it will let you write for a little bit.
