The original costumes from Star Wars are iconic. And while the prequals have (many) faults, the costumes aren’t one of those. Queen Amidala played by Natalie Portman had numerous detailed costumes, here are just a few displayed at the Denver Art Museum as part of Star Wars: The Power of Costume.

One of the first costume’s you’ll see is the red Queen Amidala costume. The bottom bulbs used to light up and the entire platform moved.

It’s hard to tell, but Natalie Portman must be pretty small. This is another famous costume, with a very large and heavy headdress.

Also on display are the handmaiden costumes, of which Padme pretended to be one for a while. I love the richness of the fabric and colors.

It was incredible to see the details up close. I had no idea so much goes into the design of a costume that might be on screen for  just a little bit.

You can see the Asian and Japanese kimono influences in these costumes.

The fabric itself has amazing patterns and details

I particularly like this silver/purple costume.

As Queen, her costumes were larger than life. But as the movies progressed her role changed to Senator, seen here in another purple costume, however the style is much different from the previous outfits and she doesn’t wear massive headdresses or wigs.

As her story started to become more of a romance, her outfits became more feminine. This was my favorite from that time period, a flowy and light dress. Again, it’s amazing the variety of these costumes when many were only on screen for a limited amount of time!

If you go:

TIME IS RUNNING OUT! The exhibit at the Denver Art Museum closes on April 9th. This is a must see for fans, and is fascinating for non-fans to see the details and how things come together to make movie costumes. You do need timed entry tickets, and they are $28 for non-member adults (and only $5 for children!) The cost comes with audio guides, and there are different ones for adults and children. (Also, the audio guides have a small screen that will help show you what it is talking about in case you are unsure.) Be sure to check it out!
