The Temple of Hathor at Dendera is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt. Even so, early christians who sheltered here defaced many parts of this Roman-Hellenistic temple. Here you can see the face of Hathor has been partially defaced at the top of these columns in the first hypostyle hall. But even so the blue paint shines through.

How high is ceiling above??
“christians” as a writer/blogger? Even auto-correct capitalizes it for you. Pretty petty and disrespectful. I notice Petra, Tal Afar, Palmyra, Hatra, etc. isn’t listed, wonder why. lol
Triggered by a single letter mistake. Dude, this is just a small shitty personal travel blog. I wrote these few sentences in 2016, and no it didn’t auto-correct or capitalized for me, which is why it is as it is. It wasn’t petty or intended in any way (as I am a Christian myself.) And why would Petra, Tal Afar, Palmyra, Hatra, etc. be listed? I haven’t been to any of those places, and this is a single image from a location in Egypt. This isn’t as deep or hard hitting commentary that you think it is. It’s just a photo from half a decade ago with a quickly written caption, on a defunct travel blog that gets maybe 10 total visit a month.
Hi Lili. Whoever wrote the original comment clearly needs serious medication. Such a shame that people like this run about poluting the waters. Thanks for the photo and the explanation of the defacement. I visited years ago and had forgotten the reason for it. Cheers.
Perhaps the more salient point is that Americans bemoan that the Islamic State has destroyed cultural heritage on an unprecedented scale, primarily in Iraq and Syria, but also in Libya. These attacks and demolitions targeted a variety of ancient and medieval artifacts, museums, libraries, and places of worship, among other sites of importance to human history. And here we see where long ago Christians have destroyed a historic cultural heritage in a place of non-Christian worship, because they sought favor of their God for being destructive to other forms of religion. Just not their sort of Gods. Must be defaced for Jesus. Is not a religion strong enough to stand on its own against others? Why not? Can doubt exist even in a minister of the “One True Church?” Can others have a different religion? Why not?
