Occasionally you witness someone else’s Travel Missteps and Mistakes. On a flight from Denver to Germany right before Christmas I saw this big drunk German guy in a cowboy hat walk onto the plane late for boarding. He had a bunch of loose items, mostly what looked like various Walmart/Target toys for children. Since he was late most of the overhead space was taken, so he would just jam a toy here and there as he found space while walking towards the back of the plane. Apparently he had also put some toys in the space for the fire extinguisher as well as the first class closet.
Right as we are about to take off a male flight attendant finds some toys and is absolutely furious. He starts asking who was leaving toys all over the plane in inappropriate places. Well cowboy German is in the back, and had fallen asleep, so could not hear him, so no one answers. The flight attendant gets worked up more and more asking for the person responsible for the toys to step forward. Finally someone yells out “It was Santa!”
The whole cabin starts laughing so much, while the flight attendant is now so livid saying it wasn’t a joke. But it was too late, we had all lost it with more and more people chiming in, and children getting excited that Santa might be on the plane. I have never laughed so hard!
The fight attendant gave up and just moved the toys somewhere else. It wasn’t until people were unloading that the German Cowboy collected his items and got a stern talking to.
Travel Missteps is an every-other week series on how sometimes part of the journey is making mistakes and getting lost.
