Fall is almost upon us (although its 90 degrees in Colorado this week), and I'm reminicing on last year's October trip to Salem. I spent 2 days in early October in Salem, and everything I had heard about how busy and touristy Salem would be was true. But I went in knowing that there would be long lines and kitchy witchy stuff, so didn't mind. Day 2 The next day I checked out very early. I had them hold my small bag.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Lili Armstrong (@liliontheloose) I then walked along

Halloween is my favorite time of the year! I wanted to share with you all some of my past favorite Pumpkin Carvings! This is the front of a pumpkin, showing a witch in front of her cauldron! And this is the back! When lit it would cast flickering shadows and light in the form of the moon, stars, and wisps off of the witch's potion! I hadn't thought about carving the backs of pumpkins to give more of an atmosphere! I actually hate the feeling of gutting a pumpkin. So I started using fake pumpkins

Souvenir Saturday: La Befana

By |January 10th, 2015|Categories: Souvenirs, Travel|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

On Monday we discussed the story behind La Befana, the Italian gift giver around the Epiphany. I wanted to share with you the little La Befana that I got in a roadside shop on the way from Rome to Venice. The witch has wide eyes, warts, and a fur hood. She carries some straw on one side, a broom on the other, and a bag that held candies on her back. Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.

Walking through Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy I hear the unmistakable cackling laugh of a witch! I turned towards a nearby stall and spy hundreds of flying witches hanging from the roof. Big ones, small ones. Some like an old woman, while others looked like a creepy old hag warts and all! Some even were animatronic whose eyes glowed red (and made the cackling laughter that caught my ear.) But surely this must be a mistake? For its not Halloween time, but after so soon after Christmas!  I was confused but had no one to ask about this strange sight,
