I wrote about the time I was in Aswan, I got shown around by a local to "his family's stores" but ended up finding a wonderful shop that had everything I needed. I took many photos in Egypt. Each tomb and temple fascinated me. Especially the hieroglyphs that adorn the walls. Here are some of my favorites from Philae Temple near Aswan, Egypt. A cartouche. A depiction of Isis, who the temple is dedicated to. A pharaoh giving offerings to Osiris. Horus surrounded by lotus flowers. Isis giving the sign of life to the pharaoh. Many of the faces were defaced by early christians, it was pleasing to see these three still with such good detail. A lion and flowers on one of the smaller side temples.
One of the most impressive pieces at the Nubian Museum in Aswan is the large Ramses II statue in the main hall. It comes from the Temple of Gerf Hussein, which is now completely flooded. Some parts were saved and moved elsewhere or in museums like this one. But the main rock-hewn temple was badly deteriorated and made of sandstone so couldn't be moved like the great Ramses II temple at Abu Simbel, so instead it was left to be flooded. Its sad to think about so many tombs, temples, and villages that are now lost beneath the waters.

It has been a dream of mine to see the Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan. And so I was overjoyed to be one of 6 people there that day in 2015. You can see how few people were there! But I was a bit dismayed to see that the path to walk on the obelisk was roped off. I knew you could walk on it, and could still see the stone that allowed you to gain entrance to it. Ghost Ships at Luxor Temple Preparing for my trip to Egypt, I read many blogs. One of the unique articles I read was "Egypt's Modern Day Ruins: The Nile River Cruises of Yesteryear" from Roaming Around the World. It was fascinating to read about the fact that tourism has dropped so much in Egypt that out of over 350 Nile Cruise Ships that use to be working less than 15 are still in use.
