Larimar is a stone only found in the Dominican Republic, but you’ll find jewelry made from the stone throughout the Carribean as the “Official” stone of the area. It’s beautiful aqua blue color does remind you of the ocean waves. I have 3 pieces of Larimar jewelry, all purchased at various places of the US Virgin Islands. The first piece

The first piece, is actually my newest acquisition, as I got it right before leaving the USVIs on St. Thomas in Charlotte Amalie at a market usually serving cruise ship passengers. We had arrived by ferry and right after exiting found ourselves near a pretty much deserted souvenir market. I remember buying two necklaces that day, one for myself and one for my sister. The one I kept has conch shell on the top half, as if to remind of a sunset over the ocean.

The earrings I got in a shop near Coral Bay, I think in the Cocoloba Shopping Center.

And my oldest Larimar piece I got at Jolly Dog on the other side of Coral Bay. This piece I’ve worn as my “travel jewelry” on a lot of trips, because it is on a cord and would allow me to snorkel with it on. However, I found out later that exposure to light and heat can make the stone fade, which is what I think happened to the first piece in the photo.

Souvenir Saturday is an every-other week series on the items that represent travel memories.
